Rt. Hon. Paul Waugh MP, Rochdale

House of Commons London SW1A 0AA

17 March 2026

Dear Paul

I hope this letter finds you well, I write to you in my capacity as Chair of the Rochdale Council of Mosques to express our deep concern and distress regarding the reported closure of Masjid Al-Aqsa in February 2026 by Israeli soldiers, and the ongoing harassment and restrictions faced by Palestinian Muslims seeking to access this sacred site.

For many months prior to this closure, there have been consistent reports of daily abuse, intimidation, and obstruction faced by worshippers. Men, women, and the elderly have been subjected to searches, denied entry, and, in some cases, physically assaulted while attempting to pray. These actions are not isolated incidents but form part of a sustained pattern that has caused profound alarm.

Masjid Al-Aqsa holds immense religious significance for Muslims worldwide. The continued restrictions and closure have deeply hurt the sentiments of billions of Muslims across the globe, including British Muslims here in the United Kingdom. Within our communities in Rochdale, there is a strong sense of anguish, frustration, and injustice at witnessing fellow worshippers being denied their basic right to practice their faith freely and safely.

As our Member of Parliament representing a diverse constituency with a significant Muslim population, we respectfully urge you to raise this matter in Parliament and seek clear answers from the Government. In particular, we ask that you consider:

· What representations the UK Government has made to Israeli authorities regarding the closure of Masjid Al-Aqsa

· What steps are being taken to uphold the fundamental right to freedom of worship and access to holy sites

· Whether the Government will publicly condemn the harassment and obstruction of peaceful worshippers.

· What diplomatic measures the UK is pursuing to ensure the protection and dignity of Palestinian civilians

At a time when global attention is focused on justice, human rights, and the rule of law, it is vital that the UK takes a principled and proactive stance. Failure to do so

risks undermining confidence in our commitment to these values, both internationally and within our own communities.

We urge you to act with urgency and compassion in representing the concerns of your constituents and advocating for the protection of one of Islam’s most sacred sites.

We look forward to your response.

Best wishes

Tahir Mahmood Chair, Rochdale Council of Mosques
